DIGITAL ARTS FACULTY

Department: Academics

Reports to: Department Chair & Academic Dean

Job Summary: Faculty teach students to think and live well in the ethos of Pacifica's Core Beliefs and Approach to Teaching and Learning.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Curriculum Implementation and Design

Teachers are responsible for implementing the stated curriculum of the school. They are to modify and revise curriculum when necessary in order to comply with accreditation requirements of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and in response to analysis in collaboration with the Dean of Academics and Principal.

Faculty, with the help of Department Chairs and the Dean of Academics, are responsible to submit all new coursework to the University of California for approval. Faculty members are responsible for the successful course approval by the College Board for all AP courses offered within their department.

Classroom Management

Teachers maintain a disciplined learning environment within the classroom, which is built out of respect, grace, and passion for the subject.

  • Facilitates a challenging academic environment
  • Maintains an organization plan for each assigned course (subject matter outline, daily lesson plans, etc.)
  • As a minimum, remains faithful to the course outline as indicated in the curriculum guide and enriches curriculum whenever possible
  • Commits to expertise and growth in discipline content and methodology
  • Uses technology to enhance student learning and achievement
  • Completing grading within cycle of assignment, updating homework and test results online in a timely manner
  • Independently pursues professional growth

Course Descriptions for Digital Arts I-III & AP Studio Art

Digital Arts I

Digital Arts I introduce students to the world of design through an overview of the history of photography and graphic design. Throughout the course, students will be given the opportunity to develop their visual vocabulary and eye for design through a regular practice of observing, critiquing, and discussing "photos of the day" (POD's) and design of the days (DOD's), while also gaining an in depth look in to the history of both photography and graphic design. While learning these visual disciplines, students will begin to explore these new found visual elements to their own photos and designs. This will be done through photography and design by using a Canon EOS Rebel SL1 and the Adobe Creative Suite. Programs that will be introduced from the Creative Suite include: Adobe Photoshop (PS), Adobe Illustrator (AI), and Adobe InDesign (ID).

Digital Arts II

Digital Arts II continues students study of the world of design through a further study of the history graphic design and video. Throughout the course, students will be given the opportunity to continue developing their visual vocabulary and eye for design through a regular practice of observing, critiquing, and discussing design of the days (DOD's) and video of the days (VOD's), while also gaining an in depth look in to the history of both graphic design and videos. While continuing their growth in knowledge of these visual disciplines, students will further explore visual elements to their own designs and videos. This will be done through design in Adobe Creative Suite. Programs from the Creative Suite include: Adobe Photoshop (PS), Adobe Illustrator (AI), Adobe InDesign (ID) and Premier Pro (PR).

Digital Arts III

Digital Arts III is a continuation from Digital Arts II as students further explore one of three mediums (Graphic Design, Photography, or Film) while utilizing Canon EOS Rebel SL1 and the Adobe Creative Suite (Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe InDesign) on MacBook Pros.

AP Studio Art 2D Art & Design

Develop your skills in a two-dimensional medium such as graphic design and photography, and others as you learn the principles of 2-D design. You'll create artwork that reflects your own ideas and skills and what you've learned.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Executes all duties in a timely manner (starts class on time, meets deadlines, attends meetings, turns in paperwork on time, etc.)
  • Seeks opportunities to promote a collegial, educational environment throughout the campus
  • Maintains communication with parents and responds within 24 hours
  • Sustains cordial, professional relationships with all students, staff, parents, and community members
  • Attends meetings and sits on committees as directed by administration
  • Is eagerly involved in the Pacifica community outside of school hours
  • Is a team player and willingly collaborates in the ongoing advancement of the school
  • Attends Family Picnics, Athletic Activities, Performing Arts Events, and Open Houses
  • Attends weekly Chapels and Assemblies
  • Participates in class overnight trip (All School Retreat)
  • Faithfully completes reasonable extra duty assignments (Supervision, Advisory/Mentoring, Office Hours)
  • Abides by the spirit and policies in the Pacifica Faculty Handbook
  • Holds self directly accountable to the chair of his/her department, the Academic Dean, Principal, and ultimately the Head of School

Advisory Groups

The culture at Pacifica is dedicated to ministering to the whole person. Advisory Groups are an intentional way to have at least one adult assigned to the well being of each student. All Pacifica teachers will serve as an advisor (mentor) to one advisory group each academic year. Each advisor is expected to:

  • Meet weekly with their students during the designated time
  • Sit with their students at school meetings such as chapels or assemblies
  • Earn the trust of their students
  • Pray for and with their students
  • Communicate with parents as needed

Other Duties & Shared Responsibilities

  • Embodies and promotes Pacifica's Core Beliefs and Approach to Teaching & Learning.
  • Arrives on-time, is well-prepared, acts professionally, and seeks to add value in every facet of the job while working collaboratively with colleagues and students to advance Pacifica's mission. Maintains communication with parents and responds to messages within 24 hours. Holds self directly accountable to their direct report and to the departments they serve, and ultimately the Head of School.
  • Wholeheartedly enjoys working with teenagers, championing their education, and encouraging their faith and Christian commitments.
  • Cultivates a vibrant culture of learning in and outside of the classroom and contributes to a healthy professional working community
  • Serves as an Advisor to a cohort of students.
  • Attends and participates in weekly Chapel and All-School Meeting as well as other school-day events/assemblies.
  • Attends and readily participates in Pacifica's annual overnight All-School Retreat as well as Admissions Open House(s), Back-to-School Night, and Commencement activities.
  • Celebrates students' by attending their co-curricular activities on occasion.
  • Contributes to the supervision of a reasonable number of after-school activities as needed.

Qualification Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree, Master's degree preferred
  • 2-10+ years prior experience teaching in independent/private schools or at the college level
  • Capable of teaching all/most levels of the subject, demonstrating a mastery of current pedagogy
  • A sincere enjoyment of working with teenagers
  • Exceptionally capable in both written and oral communication
  • Excellent organizational and presentation skills
  • Technologically savvy
  • Proven success at working collaboratively with colleagues
  • Passionate about the chosen field of study and the mission of Pacifica
